Cosmo May 2005

My dd stopped by and had a copy of Cosmo's May 2005 issue (J-Lo on cover). I was browsing thru it and saw a crocheted white bikini on page 105 that was super cute (other than that nothing special). They want $73 for the top and $125 for the bottom! It's a simple suit! Sure there's little flowers on the top edges of the bottoms and lower edge of the top, but that's all that makes it really cute. Simple dc in structure, ties on the sides.

BUT WAIT.....on page 235 was the real shocker. Another 2 piece suit in stripes, again nothing unique, ties on the sides of the bottom, simple tie behind neck, for $473....you read right....$473.00 That's four hundred seventy-three United States dollars! Who in their right mind would spend $473. on a simple crocheted 2-piece bikini.

I thought the first one was bad enough but it was all white and has these cute little flowers.....but $200 for the set and $473 for the one without flowers! My hubby says I should make some and sell them for half the price but who would buy them. He insists if they are advertising them in Cosmo, then someone is buying them and the company is making money. These suits can't be using even a ball of cotton.

Don't believe me? Next time you're in the grocery store, pick up Cosmo May 2005 with J-Lo on the front & look on those pages. See for yourself. I'm still in shock!!

  • 1 month later...

I for one would never wear a crocheted bikini ;) but when I was out for dinner with my girlfriends, they asked if I could make crocheted bikinis (having already been given multitudes of scarves, bags and mohair flower pins).

I said that I couldn't see why not, but why would they want them. Apparently they do want them, and we'll be shopping for thread sometime soon.

You might be surprised at how many you could sell, if you wanted to...

I don't mean to be a bummer, but I'm a bit experienced in that area. I used to have a website for 2 years where I sold bathing suits, called Tropical Water Colors. It's not as easy as you would first think. I was #1 in the search engines for crochet swimwear. You have to get your site up high enough in the search engines to matter. The search word "crochet(ed) bathing suits" or something similar doesn't do it. People don't really search for that. They search for "bathing suit", "swimwear", or "bikini", only. (minus the word crochet) The word bikini is one of the main search words for porno sites. Then, there are ALL the swimsuit sites who are fronted for porno sites, then there are ALL the other normal swimsuit sites. There are just too many to get yourself up very high in the search engines. BUT, I did great with just making for people I met. I also sold them at craft shows. Also, you can work something out with a clothing store to sell your suits in their store. (a surf shop would be great) They would give you an arm on a rack to fill with different sizes. These are just some ideas to go with. I'm for anyone who wants to start a business with crocheted clothing, because I'm one of them.:D

I made a crochet bikini for Hamlette when she went on vacation to Hawaii. It was from the Spring 2005 issue of Joann and it was adorable. It only took me a couple of days and used very little cotton.

Most non crocheters/knitters wouldn't think about the work put in to them *In my opinion* but they would say "Hmm...that's different".

Why would they want them? Some of them are really cute and I know if I had a body fit for a bikini, I'd opt for a crocheted cotton number instead of a synthetic.
