I was a tester for crochetsal's cute Mouse & Bear ornaments for Christmas

What is that on the bottom? Are they just crocheted over plain ornament balls?

 

I really want to make some Christmas ornaments for my tree, I like the look of the home made old fashioned type trees, The only thing I managed to crochet was one candy cane cover last year and a crochet stocking just to see if I could actually follow a pattern. =)
