Recommended Posts

Hi...I'm not new to crocheting but I haven't gotton into using all the new fancy yarns. Actually , the only yarn that I have used is Redheart because thats about all I can get around here. My question is....I read about all you ladies buying yarn online and on ebay....#1 where is the best place to buy "regular" yarn...and #2 What is that yarn called? There are so many names..I get so confused........ok..crawling back in my hole..........lol

You can buy yarn at many places on the net...

Smileys, Herrschnerrs, Mary Maxim, Annies Attic, Lion Brand just to name a few. There are many more places. I'm sure others will post their favorites. And they all sell the 'normal' brands such as Red Heart, Caron, Patons, etc.

I love Herrschner's. They have an online yarn sale going on all the time, and unless you are really, really in need of a specific color or type of yarn, it's a great way to jump in and experiment. They also have a great catalog will good descriptions, and will keep sending you updates. With my first order they sent a Red Heart catalogue that has many different types of yarn, and a huge selection of colors.

If you want quality and cheep wool, try knitpicks.com. I just ordered 15 balls of merino wool for $27 (around 1500 yards total) for a sweater. I'm still waiting on my yarn to show up, but I've heard great things from others who have ordered their brand.

I also like patternworks.com. You can either order online from them or request a catalog and mail order.

The only place that I've ordered from is Herrschners, and I like them okay. The shipping (charges and quality) didn't impress me much, but it wasn't bad. And they have an enormous selection, every time I order something I have to hold myself back, otherwise I might as well just have my paycheck direct deposited to them! They tend to have some pretty good sales too, especially with the running yarn sale. There are others they don't list on that page too, you just have to dive in and start looking. I've ordered from them three times, and that was only in the last 3 weeks or so.

My aunt is a knitter and she recommended KnitPicks when I was looking around for online yarn places. She also likes Mary Maxim, and although I haven't ordered anything from them yet I'm sure it's only a mater of time. The selection doesn't seem to be as extensive as at Herrschners, but they do have quite a bit.

You can crawl back out of your hole too, we've all been in the same position at some point, even if we chose not to admit it! Besides, it's so much more fun out here in the open! :lol

Do _not_ feel bad! I've been crocheting longer than a lot of these young ladies have been alive, and tonight, while I was wrapping up a hank of yarn into a ball, it became so tangled that I was near tears. (Is there an easy way to do that, btw?) It took 1 1/2 hours to straighten it out (the entire Pope funeral). I thought about you, saying that you were embarrassed, and I thought, "If only she could see me now." There was yarn all over the couch.

Carol... when I wind hanks I drape them around the back of my computer chair, it usually keeps them from getting all tangled up. If you're winding by hand, you could use your feet to hold the hank open while you recline in a chair or on the couch and wind while you watch tv =)

MarvieN, Thanks for the advice. Now I remember why I've seen people with their hands in the air while another one is rolling the yarn into a ball.
