I am working on square elegance and it is 64 inches long. What is the widest I dare do on this. I like the bigger ones but not so big it doesn't look right

This means that you are starting on one side and working to the other so you can just stop when you decide it is wide enough.

As far as 'looking right'...a very conventional answer would be to use the golden ratio, in which case, for 64" length, the width should be 39.5".

But heck, we make ROUND afghans too, right? It's your afghan, if you want it wider, go for it!

would look very nice made as a square or thereabouts... maybe 60 inches instead of the 64 inch length.
