Seeking suggestions for a black cape/shawl/wrap/stole...

Recommended Posts

I realized I don't have a black shawl and I am having trouble deciding on a pattern in the worst way! I have a LOT of pattern books, leafelets, free patterns I've downloaded... I'm just at a loss of what to make so I was hoping some suggestions from the wonderful crocheters on the 'ville might lead me to my "dream shawl".

Here are the qualities I'm looking for. I want something to keep me warm, so not just a scarf. I find the triangle-shaped scarves to be a bit dull, but if it had a nice stitch pattern that would be good (like the Butterfly Shawl Crochet Along - that's a great shawl!) I have 10 balls, 50 grams each (no yardage given) of Sipan 50% Alpaca 50% wool yarn I got a long time ago from a seller in the UK and I was hoping to use this - perhaps held together with another yarn as it is - I think they call it "fingering weight" - pretty thin - thinner than Simply Soft.

This could be a cape, a stole, a poncho, a shawl, a wrap... something flowy that I can wear in court to keep warm, but not like a shrug because I like my arms to be free.

So point me, please, to your favorite patterns - doesn't have to be a free download pattern - like I said, I have a LOT of books... I think I'm overwhelmed, but chances are if you suggest a pattern from a book, I might have the book:lol .

Appreciate anyone's help:hug

Hi Paulette!

There are 2 beautiful shawl patterns in Sweaterbabe.com's book. You can search the book on Amazon if you don't have it.

Also, there are some really lovely shawls/capelets in Doris Chan's new book (I like the blue curacao shawl!)

And here are a few free ones I like

Good luck picking! Starting new projects is fun :)

:thinkPat by the hook has a beautiful pattern called the light and lacy stole. Held together with a thicker yarn, it should help it to be warmer. The stitch pattern really is pretty.:hook

P.S. Whatever happened to Yugly?:think

Great suggestions... and you're definitely "catching what I'm throwing" as we say in my house:lol !

The first link, garnstudio, is one I've printed and actually is my first choice! I'm just scared because I tried another Drop Down design http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/visbilde.php?kat=Poncho&b_f=12&b_t=1&sort=drops

and it is now a UFO because I absolutely could not figure out the pattern. I even posted for help and was given a tremendous amount of really good explanations but the pattern hates me:( . And I spent way too much money on the yarn for it AND it's a type of yarn that doesn't frog well:no 'cause it has little tendrils hanging off of it... anyway, I looked over the pattern for the DropDown design that you linked and I think I could do it... The third pattern you linked is also one that I have downloaded (and I'd forgotten about) and would be a good match for the yarn I'm hoping to use.

And i do have the Doris Chan book;) and there are some great shawls in there - it seems to be mostly shawls and I think that's why I bought it:think :devil

I appreciate the suggestions and reminders of the lovely patterns out there!

So glad those might work for you! I've been eyeing shawl patterns lately, as I have promised my mom I'd make something for her :) I totally understand about the Drops website...I love their patterns but they are intimidating! Good luck with your new project and I'll be interested to see what you pick and how it turns out :yay

I thought that name sounded familiar

Here you go Light and Lacy by Dot

Too Funny:lol ! I also have that one downloaded - I totally forgot about it - that is a gorgeous design! She has some really nice designs on her site and is a great pattern writer!

This is fun! Now I'm digging through being "reminded" of the patterns that I loved and either purchased or downloaded because I just HAD to have them;)

Paulette,

My favorites are that shawl at the Michael's link and the Light and Lacy one from Pat's site. Either would look beautiful in black. Or both would (:lol). Or one from Doris' book (:lol).

But what fun finding the one pattern that "speaks" to you (:))! And I'll sure that you'll create a beautiful shawl - whatever you decide on (:yes).

Ah shucks, you're so sweet! I wish I was an octopus so I could crochet four things at once!

I bought a Colinette "kit" with all these crazy gorgeous yarns and i thought it was black and gray - turned out it was the most beautiful deep blue... just gorgeous... i'm really excited to make that one, to work with the yarns - just need to finish untangling that last two skeins... but that's another thread.

It is fun looking for THE pattern... Dot's patterns are pretty great - and that lacy crochet book that i just recently got... and someone recently posted their 'sexy lacy shawl' or something like that and i had recently downloaded that pattern too...

what to do, what to do:think
