Is "Thread Crochet" the same as tatting?

I have been a crocheter for over 30 years. I have an interest in some of the finer, more delicate patterns. I would love to EVENTUALLY try a bedspread, but I know that is a "long term goal". I'd like to start by making snowflakes. I've seen some snowflake pattern books, but I have not bought any as yet. If the pattern calls for thread, is that automatically considered tatting?

Would any of you like to suggest some good instructional books on tatting and/or thread crochet?

Thanks!

Linda

Crocheting with thread and tatting are 2 different forms of working with thread. Tatting is more delicate, even though you can use tatting thread to crochet with.

They have combined tatting with crocheting called Cro-tat I am still trying to learn this.

Ferosah who is a member here, has a book out to teach you Cro-tat. Here is a link to that book and the second is another with Cro-tat done in yarn.

tatting is traditionally made with shuttles, or a tatting needle. newer tatting methods include cro-tat which is a modified crochet hook from what I can gather. crochet and tatting are very different. tatting is more creating knots, where as crochet is looping and using the hook to weave. i love both crochet and tatting, but tatting is very slow by comparison, and you need to be MUCH more careful. you can't just pull a line of tatting to undo it.

This is a collection of tatting shuttles

I do both I love the delicate results of tatting but enjoy the speed and ease of being able to tear out your mistakes of crochet. Glad to see the interest in tatting I gobble up any info on both I prefer to crochet with thread.

I do both as well. Learned needle tatting first, then moved on to the shuttle. Crochet is definitely much faster! Although some day I'd love to do a tatted shawl...I think I will have to use a larger thread like size 10....using size 80 or 100 is just plain scary :eek

Tatting like crochet can be done in any size thread you desire. I have done several items in size 10 thread in tatting. I taught my husband to tat with size 3 thread.

I love the look of the finer threads myself in both tatting and crochet. It is so beautiful done in the the finer sizes.

I personally prefer crochet over tatting as it is more forgiving. If I make a mistake, I can frog it much faster. Picking out a mistake in tatting to me is tedious.

I do intend to try the crotat someday here soon. I was gifted one of Ferosa's wonderful books and some of those designs are calling to me.
