Teaching in my library!

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I have a beginner's crochet class coming up in about 3 weeks. I'll be teaching kids between 9-13, if I get any; having craft programs during the school year is tough on us. Does anyone know of a really really simple pattern I could use? The last time I taught this class, I had them make friendship bracelets. I'd do it again, but I may get the same kids. I don't mind paying for a pattern, either!

Thanks in advance! :)

Thanks so much for the ideas, everyone!

I think I'm going to stick to the squares. When I did the class in the summer, it took them TWO HOURS to do the friendship bracelet. *lol* They were all smart girls(some of them volunteer during the summer), but they had the hardest time getting past the foundation row. We had a good time of it, though!

The foundation row seems to be the toughest for most newbies :) What I do with my classes for raw beginners is to make up some swatches.. usually 10 stitches across.. and let them practice the stitches and turning without having to worry about that foundation row. It really helped.. when they felt comfortable with the stitches and handling the yarn then we started on their foundation and it made a huge huge difference :yes

Tapestry crochet is challenging, but on the other hand, it only uses the single crochet stitch. If you have some kids that really pay attention, then why not teach them my projects at http://iweb.tntech.edu/cventura/basket.html and http://iweb.tntech.edu/cventura/pouch.html There are stitch tutorials at http://iweb.tntech.edu/cventura/rightstitches.html and http://iweb.tntech.edu/cventura/rounds.html

Good luck!

Donna - Oh that sounds great! I would never have thought about that. Thanks for the tip. I'm going to try to crank out a few swatches before Thursday. :)

Carol - Thank you so much. It turns out that I may also end up with three of my coworkers in the class along with the kids, so it'll be an interesting mix. I know I'll definitely try them myself, but I'd love to tackle tapestry crochet with the group.

  • 1 month later...

Hi, just an update!

I was sick the day of the class(blech), so we rescheduled for this past Monday. It went over really well, and the kids were so excited that I let them practice during library hours thru the rest of the week(they also had half-days, so the distraction for them came in handy!). Thank you for all your tips, ladies! :)
