Three Color HDC Block Hat (Adult size)

Materials:
Size H hook (5.00mm)
Worsted Weight yarn (like Red Heart Supersaver yarn) in 3 colors.  Color A (CA),  Color B (CB) and Color C (CC)
Yarn needle (to weave in ends)
Scissors
 

Finish Size: Made to fit 21" inch adult size head  
 

Gauge:  First 5 Rnds of Pattern should equal 4 1/2 inches. 
 

Different Stitches: 
Back Post Half Double Crochet (BPHDC)
Front Post Half Double Crochet (FPHDC)
Front Post Single Crochet (FPSC)
Back Post Single Crochet (BPSC)
 

Notes:  
Pattern can be increase or decrease by a multiple of 4 sts.  That means by adding or subtracting stitch count by 4 stitches at a time.  When Subtract or adding stitches Do this before Rnd 8 and always end with an even number of stitches.
 

Instructions on how to incorporate a Crocheted pom pom into hat at end of pattern.
 

Directions:
Rnd1: With Color A (CA) ch4 leaving a 6" inch tail, join with slst to first chain to form ring.  Ch1, 6 hdc in ring crocheting over tail, join with slst to first hdc, pull tail taut.  (6hdc)
Note:  Donot cut off tail, you will weave this end and hide it in your hat later on.
 

Rnd2: Ch1, 2 hdc in same st as joining, 2 hdc in each of the next 5 sts, join with slst to first hdc. (12hdc)
 

Rnd3: Ch1, 2 hdc in same st as joining, 2 hdc in each of the next 11 sts, join with slst to first hdc. (24hdc)
 

Rnd4: Ch1, 1 hdc in same st as joining, 2 hdc in next st, [1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st] Do this 11 times, join with slst to first hdc. (36hdc)
 

Rnd5: Ch1, 1 hdc in same st as joining, 1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, [1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st] Do this 11 times, join with slst to first hdc. (48hdc)
 

Rnd6: Ch1, 1 hdc in same st as joining, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, [1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st] do this 11 times, join with slst to first hdc. (60hdc)
 

Rnd7: Ch1, 1 hdc in same st as joining, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st, [1 hdc in each of the next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st] do this 11 times, join with slst to first hdc. (72hdc)
 

Rnd8: Ch1, 1 hdc in same st as joining, 1 hdc in each of the next 71 sts, join with slst to first hdc. (72hdc)
 

Rnd9: Ch1, 1 hdc in same st as joining, 1 hdc in each of the next 71 sts, join with slst to fist hdc. (72hdc)
 

Rnd10: Ch1, 1 hdc in same st as joining, 1 hdc in next st, [ch2, skip next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts] Do this 17 times, ch2, skip next 2 sts, join with slst to first hdc,  slst in next st color changing to Color B (CB).  (Note: do not fasten off CA,  you will drop colors on and off but leave them connected and will have to untangle colors after every round or so.) (36hdc, 18-ch2 spaces)
 

Rnd11: With Color B (CB) slst over CA into ch2 space and ch1, drop CA ( when you slip stitch over Color A it helps carry up the wrong side of your hat/work)  With CB again hdc in first st that was skipped on Rnd 9 working over ch2 space,  1 hdc in next skipped st on Rnd 9 working over same ch2 chain like before, [ch2, skip next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 skipped sts on Rnd 9 working over ch2 space] do this 17 times, join with slst to first hdc and also over CA yarn strand at same time, slst in next st color changing to color C (CC) (36 hdc, 18-ch2 spaces) Do not fasten off CB or CA.
 

Rnd 12: With Color C (CC) slst over CA and CB into ch2 space and ch1, drop CA and CB ( when you slip stitch over CA and CB it helps carry up the wrong your hat/work)  With CC again hdc in first st that was skipped on Rnd 10 working over ch2 space,  1 hdc in next skipped st on Rnd 10 working over same ch2 chain like before, [ch2, skip next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 skipped sts on Rnd 10 working over ch2 space] do this 17 times, join with slst to first hdc and also over CA and CB yarn strands at same time , slst in next st color changing to CA (36 hdc, 18-ch2 spaces) Donot fasten off CB or CC. 
 

Rnd 13:  With Color A (CA) slst over CB and CC into ch2 space and ch1, drop CB and CC. With CA again hdc in first st that was skipped on Rnd 11 working over ch2 space,  1 hdc in next skipped st on Rnd 11 working over same ch2 chain like before, [ch2, skip next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 skipped sts on Rnd 11 working over ch2 space] do this 17 times, join with slst to first hdc and also over CB and CC yarn strands at same time , slst in next st color changing to CB (36 hdc, 18-ch2 spaces) Donot fasten off CA or CC.
 

Rnd 14: With CB slst over CA and CC into ch2 space and ch1, drop CA and CC.   With CB again hdc in first st that was skipped on Rnd 12 working over ch2 space,  1 hdc in next skipped st on Rnd 12 working over same ch2 chain like before, [ch2, skip next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 skipped sts on Rnd 12 working over ch2 space] do this 17 times, join with slst to first hdc and also over CA and CC yarn strands at same time , slst in next st color changing to CC (36 hdc, 18-ch2 spaces) Do not fasten off CA or CB.

With CA again hdc in first st that was skipped on Rnd 14 working over ch2 space,  1 hdc in next skipped st on Rnd 14 working over same ch2 chain like before, [ch2, skip next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 skipped sts on Rnd 14 working over ch2 space] do this 17 times, join with slst to first hdc and also over CB and CC yarn strands at same time , slst in next st color changing to CB (36 hdc, 18-ch2 spaces) Donot fasten off CA or CC.
 

Rnd 17: With CB slst over CA and CC into ch2 space and ch1, drop CA and CC.   With CB again hdc in first st that was skipped on Rnd 15 working over ch2 space,  1 hdc in next skipped st on Rnd 15 working over same ch2 chain like before, [ch2, skip next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 skipped sts on Rnd 15 working over ch2 space] do this 17 times, join with slst to first hdc and also over CA and CC yarn strands at same time , slst in next st color changing to CC (36 hdc, 18-ch2 spaces) Do not fasten off CA or CB.
 

Rnd 18: With CC slst over CA and CB into ch2 space and ch1, drop CA and CB ( when you slip stitch over CA and CB it helps carry up the wrong your hat/work)  With CC again hdc in first st that was skipped on Rnd 16 working over ch2 space,  1 hdc in next skipped st on Rnd 16 working over same ch2 chain like before, [ch2, skip next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 skipped sts on Rnd 16 working over ch2 space] do this 17 times, join with slst to first hdc and also over CA and CB yarn strands at same time , slst in next st color changing to CA (36 hdc, 18-ch2 spaces) Donot fasten off CB or CC. 
 

Rnd 19:  With CA slst over CB and CC into ch2 space and ch1, drop CB and CC. With CA again hdc in first st that was skipped on Rnd 17 working over ch2 space,  1 hdc in next skipped st on Rnd 17 working over same ch2 chain like before, [ch2, skip next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 skipped sts on Rnd 17 working over ch2 space] do this 17 times, join with slst to first hdc and also over CB and CC yarn strands at same time , slst in next st color changing to CB (36 hdc, 18-ch2 spaces) Fasten off Color A (CA) But Donot fasten off CC.
 

Rnd 20: With CB slst over  CC into ch2 space and ch1, drop CA and CC.   With CB again hdc in first st that was skipped on Rnd 18 working over ch2 space,  1 hdc in next skipped st on Rnd 18 working over same ch2 chain like before, [ch2, skip next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 skipped sts on Rnd 18 working over ch2 space] do this 17 times, join with slst to first hdc and also CC yarn strand at same time , slst in next st color changing to CC (36 hdc, 18-ch2 spaces) 
Fasten off Color B (CB).
 

Rnd 21: With CC sl st into ch2 space, ch1, 1 hdc in st that was skipped on Rnd 19 working over ch2 space,  1 hdc in next skipped st on Rnd 19  also working over ch2 chain like before, [ 1sc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 skipped sts on Rnd 19 working over ch2 space] Do this 16 times, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 skipped sts on Rnd 19 working over ch2 and slsts, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts working over slsts, join with sl st to first hdc. (72sts) (36hdc, 36sc)
 

Rnd 22: Ch1, 1 sc in same st as joining, 1 sc in each of the next 71 sts around, join with slst to first sc. (72sc)
 

Rnd 23: Ch1, 1 Back Post Half Double Crochet (BPHDC) around post of first sc made of Rnd 22 (same st as joining), 1 Front Post Half Double Crochet (FPHDC) around post of next sc, [ 1 BPHDC around post of next sc, 1 FPHDC around post of next sc] Do this 35 times, join with slst to first BPHDC.  (72 sts) (36 BPHDC, 36 FPHDC)
 

Rnd 24: Ch1, 1 BPHDC around post of first BPHDC (same st as joining),  FPHDC around post of next FPHDC, [1 BPHDC around post of next BPHDC, 1 FPHDC around post of next FPHDC] Do this 35 times, join with sl st to first BPHDC. (72sts)
 

Rnds 25 and 26: Repeat Rnd 24 for Rnds 25 and 26. (72 sts)
 

Rnd 27: Ch1, 1 Back Post Single Crochet (BPSC) around post first BPHDC (same st as joining), 1 Front Post Single Crochet (FPSC)  around post of next FPHDC, [1 BPSC around post of next BPHDC, 1 FPSC around of next FPHDC] Do this 35 times, join with slst to first BPSC) (72sts)
Fasten off, secure and weave in ends.
 

Note: to Weave in tail from begining hat ; with yarn needle weave yarn into stitches from Rnd1 2 or 3 times around beginning ring to keep close and weave tail into hat and anchor in. Weave other ends too.

Hat with Pom Pom Added
Pom Pom:
Rnd 1: ch4 leaving a 6" inch tail, sl st in 4th chain from hook to form ring, ch1, 6 sc in ring crocheting over tail, join with slst to front loop only of first sc. (6sc)
Pull tail taut. 

Rnd 2:With Color C (CC)  Ch4, sl st in same front loop as joining slst, [ch4, slst in front loop of next st, ch4, slst in front loop of same st] Do this 5 times, ch4, sl st in joining slst of Rnd1, slst into first back loop left unworked (from working rnd2 in front loops only) (this will set you up for next round) (12-ch4 loops)

Rnd 3: Ch1, (folding/working behind ch4 loops) 2 sc in each back loop around, join with slst to front loop of first sc.  (12sc)
 

Rnd 4: Ch4, slst in same front loop as joining, [ch4, sl st in front loop of next st, ch4, sl st in front loop of same st] Do this 11 times, ch4, slst in joining sl st of Rnd3, slst into first back loop left unworked. (24-ch4 loops)
 

Rnd 5: Ch1, (folding/working behind ch4 loops) 1 sc in same back loop, 2 sc in next back loop, [ 1sc in next back loop, 2 sc in next back loop] Do this 5 times, join with slst to front loop of first sc) (18sc)
 

Rnd 6: Ch4, slst in same front loop, [ ch4, slst in front loop of next st, ch4, slst in front loop of same st] Do this 17 times, ch4, slst in joining slst of Rnd5, slst in first back loop left unworked . (36-ch4 loops)
 

Rnd 7: Ch1, (folding/working behind ch4 loops) 1 sc in each back loop around, join with slst to front loop only of first sc. (18sc)
 

Rnd 8: Ch4, slst in same front loop, [ ch4, slst in front loop of next st, ch4, slst in front loop of same st] Do this 17 times, ch4, slst in joining slst of Rnd7, slst in first back loop left unworked . (36-ch4 loops)

Rnd 11: Ch1, (folding/working behind ch4 loops) 1 sc in same back loop,  sc decrease next 2 back loops together, [1 sc in next back loop, sc decrease next 2 back loops together] do this 5 times, join with slst to front loop only of first sc. (12sts)
 

Rnd 12: Ch4, slst in same front loop, [ch4, slst in front loop of next st, ch4, slst in front loop of same st] do this 11 times, ch4, slst in joining slst of Rnd11, slst in first unworked back loop. (24-ch4 loops)
 

Rnd 13: Ch1, sc decrease first 2 back loops together, [sc decrease next 2 back loops together] do this 5 times, join with slst to front loop of first sc. (6sts)
 

Rnd 14: Ch4, slst in same front loop, [Ch4, slst in front loop of next st, ch4, slst in front loop of same st] do this 5 times, ch4, slst in joining slst of Rnd13, slst in first unworked back loop.  (12-ch4 loops)
 

Hat part:
Rnd 15: Ch1, 1 sc in each 5 back loops, 1 sc in next back loop color changing to Color A (CA),  Join with sl st to first sc. (6sc) Fasten off Color C.
 

Rnd 16: Ch1, 2 hdc in same st as joining, 2 hdc in each of the next 5 sts, join with slst to first hdc. (12hdc)
 

Rnd 17: Ch1, 2 hdc in same st as joining, 2 hdc in each of the next 11 sts, join with slst to first hdc. (24hdc)

With CA again hdc in first st that was skipped on Rnd 31 working over ch2 space,  1 hdc in next skipped st on Rnd 31 working over same ch2 chain like before, [ch2, skip next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 skipped sts on Rnd 31 working over ch2 space] do this 17 times, join with slst to first hdc and also over CB and CC yarn strands at same time , slst in next st color changing to CB (36 hdc, 18-ch2 spaces) Fasten off Color A (CA) But Donot fasten off CC.
 

Rnd 34: With CB slst over  CC into ch2 space and ch1, drop CA and CC.   With CB again hdc in first st that was skipped on Rnd 32 working over ch2 space,  1 hdc in next skipped st on Rnd 32 working over same ch2 chain like before, [ch2, skip next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 skipped sts on Rnd 32 working over ch2 space] do this 17 times, join with slst to first hdc and also CC yarn strand at same time , slst in next st color changing to CC (36 hdc, 18-ch2 spaces) 
Fasten off Color B (CB).
