One good alternative is the "chainless dc" http://www.ravelry.com/projects/TXCr1cket/chainless-starting-dc-stitch---updated

it blends in to the rest of the stitches much more than the ch3.  You will probably still be able to tell where you joined, but it won't be nearly as obvious.  It does take a little practice but well worth it!

And there is the standing dc for when you are starting a row with new yarn http://blog.lionbrand.com/2009/10/01/motif-afghan-crochet-along-crochet-techniques-part-i/

Those are great tutorials. Moogly has one also on her Blog with photos and a video link. I find myself referring to her info frequently, mainly because she is so precise and her tutorial photos are so clear and colorful.

One other thing...the body appears to have been made flat (turning each row), and your sleeve made in the round without turning (same side always facing).  Crochet stitches don't look the same front and back, so this makes a difference.  If you want the sleeves to look the same as the body (and have the seam not drift to the left as yours is), turn the sleeve after each round.  All of the suggestions above for disguising the turning chain still apply ;)
