Hat size for 3 year old?

I've made more basic hats than I can count but always for adults. I've had a request for a couple of basic hats for a 3 year old. I have no idea how big a 3 year old boy's head is! Can someone help me out with some measurements? Or a basic pattern in kids' sizes? I used to have one and now can't find it.

I just measured my niece's head last nite; it was 19".

Thanks, guys! I didn't remember the girls' heads being so big. I won't worry about making them too big now.

My 3 year old grandson's head measures almost 20 1/2 inches. I'm making him a hat for Christmas and I'm not too sure of the size either. But the size charts I have say 16" for a toddler and 18" for a child 3-10. I'm going with the 18". Hope this helps. For a pattern, try www.crochetpatterncentral.com. They have lots of free patterns.
