How can I decide if an item needs blocking?

I Was wondering how can I tell if an item needs blocking and what type of items are usually blocked?

For me personaly I only block items made from thread because they look so much nicer. I haven't found that clothing needs to be blocked much unless it too is made with thread but even then it depends on the item.

I find that often a finished item will curl at the corners, or sometimes be a little "off" looking--stretched unevenly. Blocking will help the item look more finished. Rule of thumb (for me): If I think blocking will make it look better, I try it.

Most items don't need blocking. Some doilies do, especially if they are inticate.

 

Aside from doilies, the only items I've ever known about personally that HAD to be blocked were made by someone who had an inconsistent gauge.

If an item looks a little "off", blocking and gently pulling it into shape may help even it out. However, no amount of blocking will correct a badly worked piece

Most acrylic yarn is 'self blocking' in the washer and dryer. I know some yarns actually say if you wash in a washing machine to machine dry also.
