Wrap? Stole? Shawl?

Recommended Posts

What is the difference between a wrap, stole or shawl? I have a wedding to go to this fall and I'm thinking of making myself something fancy to wrap around my shoulders. Which word should I be looking for in a pattern?

Thanks!

Now days people are considering a stole and shawl as the same name but different looks.

It use to be a stole was a rectangle that went over your shoulders.

A shawl was a triangle that went over your shoulders and the longest point went down your back.

A wrap I'm not sure.

I may be wrong, but this is what I always think:

A shawl is triangular or rounded and worn over the shoulders, upper arms, and upper back.

A stole is rectangular and worn over the shoulders and upper arms. I think of it as a shorter, but wider scarf...not just worn around the neck.

A wrap is a larger rectangle worn over the upper body. I always think of is as a small afghan for the the body. :lol

For a wedding, I would be looking for a stole...but that's just me.

Since others have already given really great answers

to your questions, I thought I'd just add a link you

might want to check out for patterns.

This is one of my favorite places to look whenever I

am itching for a new shawl pattern. Wishing you all the

best on your pattern search.

Happy Crocheting :hook

I would look under all of those names, because you can adapt the size of many patterns to fit you the way you wish anyway.
