Oh i did something similar like that by cutting down the size of a paper towel tube and i made 2 one for my hooks and one for my pens i used a mexicana variated yarn and i made the hook holder have hdcs in the middle so i can stick my needles in there and it works out GREAT!!

I even gave it a little side basket for my stitch markers

Just cut it to the height you want and crochet a cover for it.

for the first one i did all sc then midway through i did hdc so i can stick my needles in it (as you can see) then did the top in sc. I wanted a little cup to hold my stitch markers so i mimiced the first part of my first pattern and folded over a sticky note and taped it up and used it on the inside for it to hold its form then i sewed it to the side of the holder

it works GREAT!

 

For the second one it was just for my pens so i did sc then hdc in 4 rows then finished with sc again
