HELP ME!! My simple question - figured out :)

Question

I am working on this pattern and made my chain as stated, but it is small. The finished measurements for the neck is width at neck 12". I don't want to get a lot of work done and find it too small. So I thought I would check with you guys. When it says width at neck does that mean if you lay it flat and measure? Thanks for any help!

I would interperet it that way, that you lay the finished poncho down and the neck was 12" across. I *think* that would translate into approx 24" starting chain

That looks like a pretty skinny model so if you are not of a matching physique you might want to go up a hook size or two (or add to the starting chain) to make it a little more roomy.

So I asked what size it measured because the first time I did it with a hook size smaller (I) because I crochet loose. Well that chain measured 12" long when joined to form circle "width at neck" 6". Instructions say Width at neck 12". So I did it with the hook suggested (J) and it only measured 7" width at neck. So I uped it to an L hok - only 9" this time!!!!

What is the deal!!!!!

Now that you know what I have done, here is the stitch doing.

Base ch/sc (Note this method creates a base ch and foundation row of sc at the same time: easy, sturdy and elastic, especially useful for necklines and wistlines.)

Start with a slip knot, ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, draw up a loop, yo, draw through 1 loop, yo and draw through 2 loops - 1 sc with its own ch at bottom.

Work next stitch under loops of that ch. Insert hook under 2 loops at bottom of the previous stitch, draw a loop, yo and draw through 1 loop, yo and draw through 2 loops. Repeat for lenght of foundation.

Base ch/sc 56, Join with slip st to first sc.Now that you know what I have done, here is the stitch doing.

I follow the directions and it does not work. It came out elasticy but short. I was thinking of calling the 800 from Lion Brand. I don't think I am putting my hook in the wrong spot.

heather, why don't you ch until you make it the desired length and then adapt the pattern from that. for instnace if it is suppose to be ch 30 and it doesn't match up but say 40does, then just add the stitches by dividing them into 4's /stitches on each side say it should be 8 then make it 10 at each end

i have done that and it works well for me, not everyone is a size 6. if i don't make any sense i am sorry, it is easy to show in person, but a little harder to do it on-line. but if you need help ,e-mail me here at my inbox with your e-mail addy

Okay I have tried again.

Thanks to Dots tutorial on foundation single crochet, I realized I was not doing this correctly.

But even when I was now doing it correctly my chain was only 10" and it would not fit over my head comfortably. So I decided to take Vicki's advise and chain it to a workable size. So instead of ch 56 I did 76. This made it 13", making it easy to fit over your head and an 1" over the size given in the directions. So away I went. Well when I got to Rnd 6, it sure looked bigger than when I started. Sure enough it was 18" and when I put it on a small coworker it fell off her shoulders. Apparently it grows as you go, I tried it on the same coworker at Rnd 2 and it was the perfect size. So since I was making this for purchase and the requested size was small, I frogged.

Now I have started over (following the directions) and it seems too small (only on Rnd 2) but I am sure by the time I get to a finished product it will be fine. I think ch 76 would work if you needed a large or maybe medium.

So I just wanted to let anyone who may work on this pattern that the beginning chain may look small but it will work fine. I am using the wool-ease as suggested and it seems stretchy so it may not stretch as much with different yarns. I will update you when I finish.

Thanks for all you advise and help. :)
