Some advice on edging for pillows

Recommended Posts

I am trying to figure out how to make a crocheted edging for pillows I am sewing for my nieces. I have a basic Idea like making gathered lace but I am not sure how to start and what would be the best medium..thread or yarn. I know that i want at least one fuzzy edging. I just can't fighure out how to start. The fabric I bought is disney princesses that matches their bedding.

I've never done this, so it's just a theory, but couldn't you just ch long enough to fit around the perimiter of the pillow, then make whatever type of design you want eg. picot, shells, or if you're doing furry like fun fur just a simple sc or dc would probably be best. Then, once you're done crocheting, simply sew the edging onto the pillow?

You might find an edging you like here.

I would probably go with thread if the fabric is cotton or cotton blend but use yarn if it was fleece.

As far as getting started the info in these threads will help.

You can start right on the hem of the pillowcase. there's two ways I know of for that...you can thread a larger, yet sharp needle with your crochet thread, and work a button hole st. for a foundation (every stitch, you bring the needle through the loop so a "line" shows along the top, with vertical lines to where the needle went through) or you can work with two hooks, a tiny one to separate the threads and pull the thread through for the foundation sc row...and then a more normal size one (eg 1.65mm for size 10) for the remaining rounds. There's lots of patterns for edgings that go right on.

You can also do what was suggested earlier...measure across the width of the pillowcase, double it, and add about 1" for overlap...now make a piece of crocheted edging/lace to that length and sew it on...these usually have a couple of rows of sc for sewing it on...to the underside or topside, depending on the look you want...I've seen it sometimes where the lace is almost completely on the edge of the pillow, also almost completely past the edge...works either way.

www.crochetpatterncentral.com should have lots of edging ideas. also crochetpoet: http://www.myhq.com/public/c/r/crochetpoet/ should have some.

HTH, they sound adorable! (oh yah, I'd go with thread for all of teh above.)
