Market/Shopping Bag

I have wanted to make some reusable shopping bags for a while, but I really didn't like the look of the completely mesh bags, didn't like the fused plastic ones, and most the sewn ones were too small with no stretch. So after looking around a bit, I found this pattern by Barbara J Stewart for a No Assembly Required Market Bag which was perfect for what I wanted. She suggests ww cotton yarn, but I used what I had, Red Heart.

This is my finished bag laid flat. It's flat-bottomed, which I like a lot.

Hard to see the measurements, but it's nearly 20 inches across.

This isn't quite full, lol...Actually it has about 3 to 4 regular plastic bags worth of groceries in it, including 4 cans of Ragu spagetti sauce. I wanted to test it out, lol. Actually I did have a large container of liquid laundry detergent in it to start and it was no problem to handle.

I think that I'll make a few more. It's such an easy bag to make, and it goes rather fast (I started yesterday night, and only worked on it sporatically today).

Awesome idea! :cheerNow why didn't I think of it? :thinkI just purchased 3 canvas style bags at the grocery store.:lol

Funny thing is Target sent me and the hubby one of their reusable shopping bags in the mail. At a dollar or 1.99 that they sell them for they can afford it I guess. I just hate how flimsy they are (you can tell a box corner would go right though one in a heartbeat). Try this...it really is easy.

:clapVery nice and I like the fact that you used RH yarn. You have inspired me to make this one, too. I had already saved the pattern, now as soon as I finish the Teddybear Slippers for my grandson, I will make me a bunch of these. :D

I have loads of scrap yarn I can use and this will be a great way to get my yarn down to a manageable level. Plus I get so tired of trying to find boxes or plastic bags to put my groceries in when I go to the Aldi's store. :):crocheting

Yes I like the bag pattern as well. But would like to have a pattern for a smaller bag when I just need to purchase a few item's.

Thanks!

Try a starting chain of 31 and then follow the pattern as written. That should give you a bag the size you want. Barb.
