joining squares

Recommended Posts

I'm going to go bippy! What is a good method of joining squares that won't leave a big ridge?? I've tried following the instructions on crochetcabana.com and those still leave a ridge. I tried the matress stitch they suggest, and thats not so bad, but I'd like to try and eliminate it completely. Is this just something inherent in the work that I'm just going to have to live with? Ridges belong on Ruffles, not my blanket. :lol

This is the link I've been using: http://www.crochetcabana.com/tutorials/joining_squares.htm

Also. After I've joined the squares, do I weave in the tail of the yarn used to join them as normal or is there some other trick?

There are many ways to do this, and most leave some kind of ridge. I prefer sewing them with an overcast stitch through both lps of each stitch.

You need to use a Size 13 steel tapestry needle, or a yarn needle. Carefully match the opposite sts. I hold them with right sides tog to sew. Weave the yarn ends in very carefully and thoroughly just as you usually do. If you like, you can lightly steam the joinings when it is all done.

Another thing I do is to hold the wrong sides together and whipstitch, using yarn that's the same color as the squares (or at least one of them if they are different colors). It makes for a decorative line that's not bumpy like a ridge.

Another way is the "flat braid" join http://hometown.aol.com/lffunt/flatbraid.htm and info on corners http://www.geocities.com/cdjsimon/hmb_corner_details.html

it is a little raised, but it makes a nice frame for each square and is easy to do.

weave the ends in as you normally do.
