You can't go wrong with Erin's pattern for a giant rectangle afghan with pictures. you can change colours or not as you see fit.

I have this bookmarked because so many people ask about this and it is easier to just send them to Erin.

Well, if you can do a chain and a DC, you should be able to make this:

It's not a granny square, but it's simple, and if you have any time at all to devote to it, it should be done by Christmas....

If you don't want this pattern, I hope you find one you want!

Facinating! That's how a granny square is made! Who knew? Seriously I have never seen instructions for one, I've always avoided anything having to do with piecing an afghan. Now it's not so daunting, zero piecing w/the look of granny square.

My list of projects to do is forever getting LONGER!

well, that's one way to do a rectangle granny "square". It's my favorite pattern in the world because it's so easy and if you're a fairly quck crocheter you can actually have an afghan in a few days.

To do just a basic giant granny square afghan, you just pick a granny square pattern you like, and then crochet till it's as big as you want it. (note that not all granny squares are made equal, and some might not translate well to making one big square)

I have made exactly one granny afghan that was made out of multiple squares sewn together. I did that about a month ago and it was just big enough for my aunt's pug Pudge to use...until my cousin's daughter saw it and my aunt couldnt resist and gave it to my cousin's daughter. So, now I have to start over and make a new one for Pudge. It took me about 20yrs to finally figure out how to sew squares together. (grandma tried to teach me when I was a teenager, but it was too much like handsewng...ick)

I totally agree that Erin's pattern is wonderful! The photos she has included make this such a great first-time pattern--it's like having a teacher right beside you. Seriously, both times I used this pattern I started my first few rounds sitting at my computer so I could check what I was doing against Erin's photos. Have fun!!!
