Beginner question.

Question

Hello. I am a beginner and have absolutely no idea how to read patterns. I googled and researched, but I'm still so confused. I found a really pretty doily I wanted to try and make.

http://groups.msn.com/NeedleTattingTwo/budvasedoily5floatingrings.msnw

The directions say "2ds, 8p's sep. by 4ds each, 2ds Cl tie and hide ends."

On every site I googled, I could not find anything dealing with "DS" & "P'S"

Is there a good site that you know of that can help me?! Thank you.

there is a small group of tatters here in Crochetville who would love to help if you'd like to learn http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=52227

a great place to start is http://www.tatting.net/techniques.html for videos and http://www.geocities.com/tatrasutra/how2tat1.html for clear pictures. there is also needle tatting http://www.hhtatting.com/learn.html

good luck :)

If you notice that MSN group is called needle tatting two so it's needle tatting. I belong to that group and get great help from there with my needle tatting so I highly reccomend it.

DS is double stitch, that is the only stitch in needle tatting. P is for picot. Get your self a tatting needle. They come in different thicknesses and are very very long. Go here to learn the basics and you will have so much fun. http://www.hhtatting.com/learn.html

I highly reccomend barbra fosters book and needle. Her color illustrations are wonderful and she even had lefted handed photos for a dummy like me. I could never get the hang of shuttle tatting but the needle tatting I can get and do a few ornaments and stuff. It's just one stitch the double stitch and it's so very silly easy you will be amazed.

I am currently working on the amusement doily and having so much fun trying something a little harder for me. When I am done with this I am going to try some collar edging for my t-shirts. Mary

If you have a Michael's craft store by you check there. Ours just had Barbara Foster's book and needle set on clearance for $7 so I got them for my church group because they want to learn. Our A.C. Moore used to carry the tatting needles and that's how I got my set of finer ones using a 40% coupon but I haven't seen them in a while. Our Joanne's carries no tatting supplies at all. Mary
