Feet Need Socks Crochet-along

I'm not suppose to join the rounds. But I am suppose to mark the stitch that I decreased in (one on each side of the sock). When I go to mark that stitch it seems like after a couple of rows it has traveled forward till it looks all catiwaumpus(is that how you spell it? :thinking2 ). I moved my markers back to where I thought they should be, but now I'm afraid that I shouldn't of done that. So I'm really discouraged with that sock pattern. But I really liked them, but since I can't make it work....:shrug ...does this mean a new trip to Michaels for a new sock book? Or...do I need to stretch a little and figure it out? You all be my conscience. :wink

It's not the pattern, Joy, it's something about working in the round. I've tried two sock patterns from different sources, and have had wandering stitches both times. I'm going to look through my refernece books and online to see if I can figure out why this is happening, and if it's supposed to happen or not.

Here's my sock. It's partner will probably grow sometime tonight. I used the pattern from Grafton Fibers toe up pattern. I turned it into a little anklet sock. They seem to get the most use around here. :)

Very cute! I love anklets. When I'm done with my pillowghan, I am gonna make some too. I printed out that pattern.

BTW, I tried that "joan's sock" one-piece sock pattern from lion, and hated it. I frogged it, because it just wasn't coming out right. Anyone else try it yet?

Tiff, you anklet looks great! I'd always wondered what that self-striping yarn would look like crochet instead of knit; they never show crocheted ones. I've had some footies in mind for a while myself. Footies are my favorite! But, as you all know, I haven't done much work on any socks. :nono :P Rebecca, I promise I'll get back to that ripple sock as soon as I can. :oops

Joy, you're welcome! I'll let you know as soon as I find out anything about the wandering stitch! :P

Thanks to all of you. :) Glad you liked my sock. :)

The stripes don't appear very stripey, but they fooled Andy, my husband. When I showed him the sock he asked how much money it took to put all of those different colors together in a sock. He thought I created the design on my own!

I have the answer to the issue of the moving/traveling/wandering stitch! :woohoo I found it in Donna Kooler's Encyclopedia of Crochet, which, by the way, is an excellent book and I highly recommend it for all crocheters, beginners or advanced.

When crocheting a cylinder (which is essentially what a sock is), you can make a spiral cylinder (no join, no turn), straight seam cylinder (join and turn), or spiral seam cylinder (join, no turn). She says, "Working the cylinder with turns at the end of each round will give you a straight seam and even rounds, in case you want to make stripes. If you do not reverse direction every round, your rounds will be even, but the seam will spiral around the cylinder as you work." (Note: She is not discussing socks, specifically, but just making any type of cylinder.)

There are also the following illustrations:

Spiral cylinder - this one shows no seam

Straight seam cylinder with turn - this one shows a vertical seam

Spiral seam cylinder without turn - this one shows a seam leaning to the right for lefties and leaning to the left for righties.

Most sock patterns say not to join, and that's so you do not have a seam. So just crochet away following whatever pattern you're using, and don't worry about that wandering stitch! :wink

Hope this helps all you fab sock makers! :thumbsup

Donna - You did so good! :clap I'm going to keep my eyes open for the book. 8o Well I decided in the mean time to try a new pattern. The directions read alot easier and if I can accomplish this one...I'll try the other again. I've been thinking about the other one though and wondered if it was even important to keep the stitches marked that they said to because it was where you decreased for the top of the heel leading into the "cylinder" for the foot heading towards the toe. If that makes any sense at all. Seems to me like you would not use them again, but would just decrease for the toe? I'm going to give it a shot. :thinking1

Thanks for the great find, Donna! I wonder if the turn would make the Magic Stripes look more like stripes... It might be worth trying on my next pair. :)

Thanks, Donna! I've been following this discussion b/c I couldn't figure out why the stitch on the giant stuffed panda I'm attempting (out of BHG Simply Creative) kept moving. Thanks for clearing up the mystery!

Thanks, everybody! I'm just glad I could help. :)

Joy, if you said what sock pattern you were using, I've forgotten. :o But if it says to mark the stitches, you'll probably need them. I can't imagine why they'd say to mark them if it wasn't necessary. But without having crocheted the pattern myself, I can't say for sure.

Tiff, I'll be interested to see if turning makes a difference with the Magic Stripes. :thinking1 I don't think a crocheted sock will ever be as nicely stripey as a knitted sock, though. Maybe it's time for some self-striping crochet yarn! :pig

Emily, glad this helped you! :thumbsup

I finished one sock! It took ages. The toe was probably the hardest part. I had to rip it back several times to get it to fit right and ended up having to do a complete custom shaping. Maybe I have odd toes. But I'm really pleased with it, and really keen to get the second sock finished so I can wear them!

I did it! I finally finished a sock yesterday. :woohoo A new pattern and the way they worded it made all the difference. I think I could go back now to the other pattern and at least make it work. It took two days of just crocheting to finish it, but I was determined. My family said it looked ok even. :bounce My youngest wants a Celtic bookmark and thought I should put my sock away till I made it for her. No Way :rock

Yay Joy! It was that way for me, too, but it took my second pair of the same pattern to another pattern. Of course, I've only tried two patterns now, so the next will be the real test! Congratulations on your new sock!!

I used "Learn to Crochet Socks" by American School of Needlework. The exact pattern that I used was the Basic Sport Sock. My cuff was taken from Mango Tango of the same book. My dears thought that it looked really warm and maybe I should make another pair for this winter. :bounce I love it when he thinks I should get more yarn for something. :woohoo
