adding a zipper

Hi! I am working on a Sleeping Sack for my baby that's due in August, that requires me to single crochet a zipper down the front. I have never tried to add a zipper, and am not sure how to crochet one on. Do I need to make small holes on the zipper so I can get the hook in for the single crochet? Any tips or tricks to crocheting a zipper in? Thanks!

I usually just hand sew the zipper in place. I've tried using my sewing machine but it stretched out the crochet way too much.

I've never crocheted a zipper in...I hand sew the zipper in. That doesn't sound right to crochet the zipper in, unless you would take an awl and punch holes in the zipper first.

 

Some sewing machines can handle stitching a zipper onto thick knit or crochet fabric without stretching it...but I just hand sew it in...it will be strong and wont' unravel...

You could run a row of 6 to the inch stitches along the zipper and use that to put your crochet hook into it. I would be tempted to go with the Hand-picked zipper technique for this
