what is a good pattern for a beginner?

I have just started crochet (and knitting)... and I am wondering where to start.

What is an easy pattern for a newbie?

if you want easy and dazzling... this is the one that brought me to The Ville

it can be done with a simple mesh pattern (dc. ch1, dc. ch1, dc. ch1, ) and so on and so on.

Now I am assuming that you can do your chain stitch and have learned a single crochet or a double crochet.

The other matching fuzzy blue one is also totally wow and easy,

I will keep an eye on this thread and if you want to try this (even for a little girl to start) and want some coaching, I'll be here to check. subscribing now so I know if you post.

When I first started I just did a single crochet and then a double crochet scarf....helped to get the techniques down, wasn't too time consuming and it's also easy to rip it out if you make a mistake. I'll try to find some patterns that would be simple and come back, but most that I used weren't from the internet! Good luck! :)

About.com has a listing of what they consider easy patterns.

Frugalhaus also has some. These are the actual patterns, in pdf format.

I would suggest quick to finish items, like dishcloths and scarves using the basic stitches and variations. If you can crochet in the round, hats are nice and quick. Dishcloths and squares using different patterns are a great way to increase your skills while not attempting a huge project with a new stitch.

I would also suggest using a basic, light colored yarn rather than fancy yarns until you feel comfortable with your stitches. It is easier to see the stitches with light colored smooth yarns. Homespun makes a beautiful scarf, but is not easy to work with for a beginner IMHO, as are the fur yarns.

One of the first things I made was a Shells and V's scarf. It was great practice on both the stitches, and working on making nice even rows!

Actually, I think the very first was just a simple SC dishcloth.
