I've make it all in spiral, the body too. And for the floss I do :

Chain 6 (5+1) turn

1 sc in each, ch, turn

[1 sc, 1ch, 1 slip stitch] in each.

WW means worsted weight. It is a thicker yarn.

 

You can certainly do these guys in any size yarn (or thread if your brave), just make sure to use an appropriate hook size!
