My stuffing is showing

I am in the process of making my first crochet stuffed animal, a little bear. I have completed the main body except for the closing the top. When I stuff it, I can see the stuffing between my stiches. I tried putting less stuffing in, but it looks too skinny. I did the same hook I normally use with the yarn I am using, but maybe for stuffed animals you need to use a smaller hook so the stiches are tighter. Or maybe there is some other trick to stuffed animal I don't know about.

 

Please give me some advice.

Depending on the size of the toy, try putting some (unworn) Pantyhose into all the spaces and putting the stuffing inside that.

This is a fairly common problem with crochet, compared to knitting where the stitches are closer.

There is bound to be someone here who makes toys, who has the perfect answer for you, but mine will give you something to start off with.

Unless it's very obvious, I wouldn't worry about it. You could use cloth to match the yarn between the outside and stuffing, like a lining. Stuffing in the colors of brown, black and camel is available at Sisters and Daughters: http://www.sistersanddaughters.com/dollspa.html

It would be an alternative to white stuffing.

i make sure that my gauge is really tight. My experience has been that holes appear more with dc sts so I try to stay with sc where there are curves.

It is important that you have a very tight gauge when you are going to stuff. I always use at least one size smaller hook when making toys, sometimes 2 sizes smaller.
