Baking Soda

I've discovered (from a friend) that baking soda works really well for fulling. I just thought I'd pass on the tip in case you wanted to try something other than soap or vinegar.

About how much baking soda would you use in a washing machine?

Baking soda is alkaline. It is to do with the ph levels in the water . I think that is the same reason they suggest soap and vinegar as it alters to acidity/alkaline balance in the water which assists the felting process. That is the extent of my scientific understanding :lol , but I do know this has an effect at a molecular level on the wool fibre.

I can attest that it definitely works, and very well! :c9 I used it in my machine along with a small amount of laundry powder when I felted my first big project and it turned out great. You can see the results in this entry on my blog.

I'm new at felting/fulling and just did my first tote project. The book the pattern came from said to add 2 Tbsp of Baking Soda. I had no idea why but did it and it seems to work fine.

Hi,

I did some research about Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and I've noticed that it's really an amazing product!

We can easely find it in supermarkets, it's cheap and non polluting!

The sodium biarbonate is used to do the cleaning of the whole house, to take smells away, to make your hair softer, to whiten your teeth, to wash your car, to make your meat tender, to rise the pastry of your cakes, etc.

In conclusion, it's an outstanding product!
