issue working both sides of foundation chain

Is there anyway to avoid such a big gap in second chain when working down both sides of foundation chain.

In the pic I have done a foundation chain skipped first chain and done 1 SC in next chain. I have then done 1 SC in each stitch along until last one in which I did 3 SC. I then did 1 SC in each stitch other side of chain until I got to the other side of chain I put my first stitch in. I did 2 SC stitches in there.

I've never had quite such a big gap when turning an oval corner, but  I would think you should be able to spread the stitches out over a couple of stitches instead of one?  This works in my head, it's worth giving it a try.

@grannysquare thanks for the idea but I have realised part of the issue is the first stitch making the chain big

That was my thought. You get better at it.  Pull that chain a little tighter and if you have to,  use a smaller hook to work those stitches into it.  Then swap back to your larger hook.
