Can you tell me what this pattern is??

KJoy

Question

Hello!

I bought a bag of yarn at an estate sale this weekend that included a large but unfinished piece of afghan. I am much more of a knitter but think I can finish this if someone can help me figure out the pattern.
(The yarn is variegated so that makes it more challenging for me to see the stitch pattern.)  It's Lion Brand Tweed Stripes.

I'm going to visit my mom in Wisconsin in Sept and would like to bring her the afghan.   Any guidance is greatly appreciated!!    I am going to get my hooks out and see if I can replicate it tonight.
Please help!!

Thank you in advance for your expert advice!   Kathleen

Its made similar to these but the combination of stitches in the shell on yours is different.  Your shell looks like its made of 3 double crochets, 2 or 3 chains, and a single crochet in each space across.  I would pull apart a couple of the shells and count as I pulled them apart.

Welcome to the 'ville!  It looks to me like a variation of the 'corner to corner (c2c)' stitch, aka a bunch of other names--crazy stitch, brick stitch, other names I'm forgetting.  You can work the stitch in rows, or diagonally.  This looks like the 'easy-ish kind', worked in rows.  Other Crochetvillers, please double check me on this stitch pattern, it is one I never do.

I knit and crochet -- If I were to help a fellow knitter learn to crochet, this would be one of the last stitch patterns I'd choose to teach crochet.  The 'building block stitch' of this compound stitch is double crochet (US terms), which by itself is easy, BUT this particular arrangement of DCs very disorienting.  You don't work back and forth, or in the round, you work every which way, sort of.

I think the best thing to do is to find a video, first to learn how to make US Double Crochets, and then this stitch worked in rows.  I'll see if I can find one...

Thank you, Villager!  I posed this question on facebook and got a similar reply...  Did not know it could be worked in rows, tho.  The you tube videos showed only the diagonal method and "turning/flipping" the work.

I will check out the links you sent. I'm sure my mom won't mind what it looks like but I'd like it to be close to correct!

Thank you for your help!
