How to turn in work?

Diana-18

Question

I’m a semi-beginner, but I’ve understood how to do turns in crochet when starting new rows and the chain, etc. However I’m having difficulty understanding how to read the part of this pattern when it says “turn work, 5 sc” in row 1? How do you do more single crochets in the same row after you turn the work?

here is the pattern:

start with ch 7, you will crochet around the chain, start in the 2nd ch from crochet hook

R1: Inc.: 2 sc in the first stitch, 4 sc, 3 sc in last ch, turn work, 5 sc (=14)

R2: Inc: 1 sc, 2 sc in next stitch...

Thanks a lot for your help in advance!

You're  right--we get so many oval questions here!  At least this pattern gave a heads up by saying 'you will crochet around the chain'.

But if one had never made an oval before that might have been overlooked or misunderstood--as in, a pattern worked center out would say something like 'chain 6, join, chain 1, make 12 sc around the chain', which is an entirely different meaning for 'around the chain'.
