Blanket for Sunny

jessicali

Question

My husbands niece is due March 18th with her first baby, who is going to be named Sunny. I am looking for the perfect baby afghan pattern to make him an afghan, and I'd love to incorporate a Sun on it somehow. I would like it to be as few colors as possible, so I can take it with me when I fly to Florida next week and work on it while on the plane and on my layovers, which are 1.5+ hours each.

Would it be to simple to do a simple single or half double crochet and then stitch (embroidery) his name on it? What color should I do for the main afghan? I would still try to find a Sun applique to attach to one corner!

Any help would be helpful! I would like to grab the yarn before I leave on Wednesday the 8th (which is a nasty 6am flight out of Kansas City!)

For the name, a really easy way to do this (and you can use a freehand  'script' font, doesn't need to be block letters) is to to do surface slip stitch, aka tambour crochet (embroidery).

Here are some motifs that have suns in them.  The last one looks like a flower, but would look more sun-like all in yellow.  Others are sort of busy background color -wise, you could make the suns stand out more by reducing the background colors.

Although I couldn't find one with a sun, it would be awesome to do a corner to corner blanket with a sun; you could look at a some clip art and try sketching it on some graph paper with the same number of grids  as an existing C2C pattern.  Here's an example, it's on a 41x41 grid.  You could draw your own picture on a square grid of similar size and follow the guideline of this pattern to make it.

I meant to include a link for how to do the embroidery

http://www.crochetspot.com/how-to-crochet-surface-crochet-or-surface-slip-stitch/

Also meant to add that the motifs would be more portable, and you could join as you go to make the assembly easier.  On the other hand, the C2C would go pretty fast, since you are working the colorwork in DC versus more typical SC .  As far as colors, I don't think you can go wrong with a baby- or aqua- blue sky and yellow sun.   :sun

Just had a brainstorm, what about a round ripple, yellow in the middle and blue around that?  Would be simple to do.

Yep, I saved that one on my pinterest board.  I like how there's a row of color in the next set of the previous color.  (hmmm did that make sense?)

I like round ripples...I have a few that are in bags not finished.
