Chevron Stitch in the Round

SammieLily2

Question

Hello there!

I've been looking into making some earflap hats and beanies as of late, but I'd love to make them with a chevron/zigzag pattern instead of just straight stripes! However, I'm having many troubles trying to figure out how to get the chevrons to work in the round.

Has anyone worked chevrons in joined rounds before? Would you mind walking me through it if you have? I've messed around with it a few times but it always seems to overstretch or add too many stitches to the hat.

Thanks!

I just made my first round ripple, but it was flat.  Darski is an expert in round ripples.  She even posted her pattern, which is flat.  To get into to a hat/bowl shape, just stop increasing when you've got the diameter you want.

Here's Darski's pattern ...

ETA: I googled "crochet chevron hat pattern" and got a lot of links with a variety of looks.
