trouble with filet crochet

creativeK

Question

I'm trying to get this filet crochet thing. I found a pattern in  "The complete photo guide to crochet" and I'm having trouble understanding it....

1)

Row 1: 1 dc in 6th ch from hook *ch 1,skip next ch,1 dc in next ch,rep from * across turn

Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as a dc,ch 1) skip first dc *1 dc in next dc,ch 1 rep from * across row,ending 1 dc in the 3rd ch of turning ch,turn

there is another one as well....

2)

Row 1: 1 dc in 8th ch from hook *ch 2,skip next 2 ch, 1 dc in next ch, rep from * across turn

Row 2: Ch 5 (counts as a dc,ch 2) skip first dc *1 dc in next dc,ch 2 rep from * across,1 dc in the 3rd ch of turning ch,turn

Well I've never done filet crochet - but - what it looks like to me is the mesh part of the pattern.

The Double Crochet stitches are all being worked into the Double Crochet stitch from the row below, and there are one or two chain stitches in between each dc (depending on which pattern you're reading).

What you should end up with is two rows of open squares.

I'm guessing the pattern(s) you're looking at will have some filled-in squares up further in the pattern which will show the picture.

I hope that helps!!  Good Luck!!  :tup

CreativeK, I have this book. Since this is an entry in a stitch dictionary it isn't forming a picture; as Melani said filet is based on open and filled mesh, and both of these patterns are for open mesh.

i suggest you use the stitch symbol diagrams and the clear photos to help you see how to do these.  Row 2 in each case is simply to dc in each dc and chain in between the dc sts, either ch 1 or ch 2.

Hass design has a video that might help http://www.hassdesign.com/BasicFiletTechniques/

I have done filet crochet and you normally follow a chart after the first row is started. Filet crochet is easy (believe it or not) but it is not written on a row by row basis like other patterns. You have to follow a chart and that will show you where the open and closed spaces should be.

Haas Designs and Smart Crochet have some great tutorials; sometimes it takes a second description of a new technique for it to 'click'.
