Yarn for Amigurumi

what's the best weight of yarn for amigurumi,ya know stuffed animals etc. I'm trying to make a crocheted ball for a head but I'm using 5 weight yarn,and I'm having some slight trouble.

I usually use worsted weight 4 and it seems to work fine.

ww or sports weight, depending on how big you want the ami.

I have another question about amigurumi....

 

Some patterns use the chain 2 method and I'm having trouble with it,could I just use the magic ring? also for example if it says "6 sc in second chain from hook" could I do a magic ring and 6 sc into that ring? or could I also chain 4 or 6,join and work 6 sc into that ring?

For amigurumi I would recommend magic ring. That way you are sure that the circle will be closed completely and you won't have stuffing poking out.

I've been able to convert the ami's I make into magic circle patterns.  You have to make sure the count stays right and you do have to make sure there isn't any special effect they are trying to obtain.  For instance there is a chain 6 that works around the whole chain.  For that one you don't want to use the magic circle.  Working around the chain creates a specific shape I don't get working into the magic circle.
