What specific yarn do you want to use? If it is a heavy worsted i think it will be ok, a J hook is not that big.  If a light worsted like Simply Soft it might not work too well.  I would say try it and see, using the J hook.  the worst that can happen is you decide you don't like it and end up buying different yarn for it---or finding a different pattern for the worsted.

I wanted to use loops and threads impeccable in earth ombre, it's to match a bigger one I made for my sister so I was kind of trying to find a pattern I liked that I could do, but I'm having trouble finding anything in that weight of yarn.

I agree with swatching.  Fuzzy yarn is often rated at a higher weight of yarn than you might think it should be, because of the halo.  Try a swatch with the yarn you want to use and see if you can match the gauge of the pattern, and if it looks OK to you.  Actually, a J hook is sort of small for homespun so it should likely work fine.
