As far as I know, there are several ways to do it. You can take a tapestry needle and some yarn and do a whip stitch, or you can hold your two pieces together and slip stitch them together. Hip to Crochet has an entry on the backstitch, which it recommends for use on its Bohemian Coat Sweater. According to the book, the backstitch "makes a very strong seam that doesn't stretch". Looks like it's just done with a tapestry needle and yarn.

I've never pieced together any different pieces of crocheted work, so I couldn't recommend any particular way of doing it, but at least these are some options. Good luck! I can't wait to see it when it's done!
