Foundation chain

Irene

Question

I need to know if exists a stitch that be more "elastic" than the foundation chain for the bottom of a blouse or sweater? Thanks for your help.

While I haven't actually tried this, the Double Base Chain is said to be more flexible and elastic than the the traditional starting chain. There's a tutorial for this here at Weird Mirror.

Or you could work a ribbing for the bottom of the sweater.

Another option is to do a foundation sc or foundation dc stitch. This starting "chain" is done by working dc into the base of the preceding st and working increases this way. You do not do a starting chain and it is more elastic than the standard foundation chain. I use it quite often on blankets and other items where I want a nice finished edge on both the top and the bottom. It does say that it is more elastic than a standard foundation chain but I haven't tried it for sweaters as of yet. Here are the basic instructions.
