Need Your Help

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm Rhonda and I'm trying to find out the name of a little phamphlet or magazine sent by subscription to ladies in the early 1800's. The magazine was printed in black and a sort of off white or wheat color paper. It included mostly crochet patterns but also some crafts and cooking recipes and usually one or two knitting patterns. It was a monthly subscription and was eagerly awaited by ladies living on the prairie. Later as small towns cropped up and transportation made it possible for women to visit each other more frequently these little magazines became even more important as they became a way for the ladies to have group projects. If anyone knows of the magazine I'm talking about please let me know. I will remember the name if I see it. Any and all help will be deeply appreciated.

This is the first thing I thought of and when I Googled Ladies Home Journal, this is what I found.

Looks like it is still in print today.

Have fun.

http://www.antiquepatternlibrary.org/completelist.htm More books than magazines, but fun to look at anyway

Perhaps one of these, I have a few copies / clippings from a flea market find (WWI era magazines, may have been earlier too)

The Modern Priscilla

The American Woman

Plain and Fancy Needlework

Needlecraft (some patterns represented in the link above)

PS :welcome to the 'ville!

Edit again - try googling periodicals of the 1800s

You might try going to Celtsvintagecrochet in yahoo groups. If you contact the lady in charge, she may be able to tell you the name. The group is monitored closely, so be sure you read the rules if you decide you want to join. It's a fantastic source for old patterns and information.
