Sock yarn/Fingering weight?

Recommended Posts

I have a pattern that calls for "sock or any other fingering weight yarn"

So my question is... I have lots of baby yarn, would it work for the pattern?

The specific yarn called for is Gedifra Fashion trend Sportivoe, and since it has the word "sport" i thought maybe it might be a bit thicker than most sock yarn...

I found this http://www.yarntoyarn.com/Fashion_Trend_Sportivo_Gedifra_yarn.htm

which says the knitting gauge over 4" is 28sts and 38rows, and in the symbols it looks like 2.5 to 3mm needle, so that is pretty small yarn. you could compare the knitting gauge of the baby yarn you have.

also http://www.funknits.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=125&category_id=17&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=33&vmcchk=1&Itemid=33 says it has elastic in it.

The fingering yarn that I have is even thinner than baby yarn. I often have to double it up to make baby things. Isn't sock yarn two ply???? Not sure I'm right about that. I know it is very thin to keep the bulk down when knitting or crocheting socks.

The thing with baby yarn/sport yarn, different manufacturers call both US size 2 and 3 sport and/or baby. Very confusing.

Sock yarn typically has nylon blended in for strength. If you had wool yarn of the right weight, you might get by, wool is tougher than acrylic. Acrylic doesn't wear well, not a good choice for socks or slippers.
