felting with wool?

I've done lots of projects with different kinds of 100% wool. Usually they shrink about the same amount. If one wool shrinks a lot more than another, you really have to do a lot of tugging and pulling and shaping to get them both to look the same - but it can be done as long as you do it when the wool is still damp.

Here are two links to pictures of a bag I made using all sorts of wool yarn and wool blend yarns: Cascade 220, Patons, Lyon Landscapes, a Mohair/Metalic blend, etc. I used two strands of yarn held together throughout, either two strands of worsted 100% wool, or one strand worsted 100% wool carried along with one of the blends.

I have a Q to add to this. Do you HAVE to use 100% Wool? Or can it be a mix?

Thanks so much!

I read somewhere it has to be atleast 50% wool. I have only used 100% wool though because I also read the less wool the less it felts and I like the tight felt look.

Lion Landscapes is a wool blend and will felt - though not as much as a 100% wool. Patons SWS is a wool blend with soy that people have reports felts much faster and, therefore, shrinks more when agitating it for the same amount of time as you would 100% wool. You cannot use superwash 100% wool as it will not felt at all. The best thing to do is swatch your yarn, measure it, throw it in the wash with a regular load, and see what happens.
