First Intarsia project?

Fiorst of all... did I spell that right? You know what i mean though, multiple colors in a row.

 

I'd like to learn to do this... but I have no clue where to start. Do i need special tools, beyond a hook, a yarn needle and scissors?

 

Anyone know of a nice simple project to "test the waters" with?

That looks quite interesting. Have a few things to finish before I attempt anything else, but I will watch and see if someone starts a crochet along.
