Triceratops Squares

Full Triceratops Square

 

Materials:

sport weight yarn in two colors

G hook

yarn needle to weave in ends

 

Note: You don't need to use the same hook and/or yarn I did. This would work at least as well if the granny square was made in worsted-weight yarn, where you could vary the number of rounds or the size of the square.

 

Gauge is unimportant since it's not a fitted garment, but for reference this finished square is approximately 9".

 

Special Stitches/Combos:

Sc decl: Insert hook in first st. indicated. Yarn over & draw up a loop. Insert hook in next st, YO & draw up another loop. YO & draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Beginning corner: Ch 3, Dc. Ch1. DC twice, all in same space.

 

With color A, chain 2.

 

1: Sc in second chain from hook. Ch 1, turn. 1 sc

2: Sc twice in stitch. Ch 1, turn. 2 sc

3: Sc in both stitches. Ch 1, turn. 2 sc

4: Sc twice in both stitches. Ch 1, turn. 4 sc

5 & 6: Sc in each stitch. Ch 1, turn. 4 sc

7: Sc twice in first stitch. Sc once in each of next two sts. Sc twice in last st. Ch 1, turn. 6 sc

8: Sc in each st. Ch 1, turn. 6 sc

9: Sc twice in first st. Sc once in each of next 4 sts. Sc twice in last st. Ch 1, turn. 8 sc

10: Sc once in each of first 7 sts. Sc three times in final stitch. Ch 1, turn. 10 sc.

11: Sc twice in first stitch. Sc once in each remaining stitch. Ch 1, turn. 11 sc

12: Sc twice in first stitch. Sc once in each of next nine stitches. Sc twice in last st. 13 sc At end of row, chain 5.

13: Sc in 2nd chain from hook & in each additional chain. Sc in each of next 12 sts (the scs). Sc twice in last st. Ch 1, turn. 18 sc

14: Sc in each stitch. Ch 1, turn. 18 sc

15: Sc in each of first 17 sts. Sc twice in last stitch. Ch 1, turn. 19 sc

16: Sc twice in first stitch. Sc once in each of next 13 sts. Sc twice in 15th st. Ch 1, turn. Leave all remaining sts unworked. 17 sc

17: Sc in each stitch. Ch 1, turn. 17 sc

18: Sc twice in first stitch. Sc once in each remaining st. Ch 1, turn. 18 sc

19: Sc in each stitch. Ch 1, turn. 18 sc

32: Sc decl. over first two sts. Sc once in each of next seven sts. Sc decl. over next two sts. Leave remaining sts unworked. 9 sc

33: Sc decl. over first two sts. Sc once in each of next 5 sts. Sc decl. over final two sts. Ch 1, turn. 7 sc

34: Sc in each stitch. Ch 1, turn. 7 sc

35: Sc in each of first 6 sts. Sc three times in last st. Ch 1, turn. 9 sc

36: Sc three times in first st. Sc once in each remaining st. Ch 1, turn. 11 sc

37: Sc in each of first 9 sts. Sc decl. over remaining 2 sts. Ch 1, turn. 10 sc

38: Sc in each stitch. Ch 1, turn. 10 sc

39: Sc in each of first 5 sts. Sc decl. over next two sts. Leave remaining sts unworked. 6 sc Ch 5 at end of scs. Turn.

40: Sc in 2nd ch from hook. & in each remaining st. Ch 1, turn. 10 sts

41: Sc in first 6 sts. Leave remaining sts unworked. Ch 5 at end of scs. Turn.

42: Sc in 2nd chain and each remaining chain. Sc in each of next 4 sts. Sc decl. over last two sts. 9 sc

43: Sc decl. over first two sts. Sc in next st. Sc decl over next 2 sts, leaving remaining sts unworked. Ch 1, turn. 3 sc

44: Sc in each stitch across. Ch 1, turn. 3sc

45: Sc in first two sts. Sc twice in last st. Chain 4 at end of row. Turn.

46: Sc in 2nd ch from hook & in each remaining chain. Sc in first two scs. Sc decl. over last two sts. Finish off. 7 sc

 

Note: The absolute easiest way to finish this into a square is to simply crochet a granny square big enough to surround the dinosaur and sew the motif to it. If, however, you're masochistic like I am, you can follow the remaining directions to make your square directly on the motif itself.

 

Pattern note: To anchor the initital stitches to the motif, YO as normal for a DC, then insert your hook from back to front & then bring it back around, similar to the move you use when making a long DC. Or whatever is easiest for you; I find it hard to describe, sorry. Also note that I'm not positive about my row numbers here, the important thing is to have the beginning of the square in the widest (body) part of the motif. Much of the motif will be unattached to the backing square, this is as designed.

 

1: With wrong side of motif facing you, join color B with a slip stich in row 27 near the top. Work BEGINNING CORNER in same place. Ch 2. Place 2 DC into row 22. Ch 2. Work CORNER in row 17. Ch 2. Rotate so tail is upright. Place 2 DC in middle of row 17. Ch 2. Rotate so legs are on top. Work CORNER in row 17 near the bottom of the motif. Ch 2. Place 2 DC into row 22. Ch 2. Work CORNER in row 27. Ch 2. Join to top of first stitch of BEGINNING CORNER.

2: Slip stitch around to first ch-1 sp.Work BEGINNING CORNER in center of corner. Ch 2. DC twice, ch-2 in each ch-2 sp. Place CORNER, ch-2 in each corner around, joining with sl st in first st of round.

 

Continue in same manner, with 2DC, ch 2 in each ch-2 sp & CORNER, ch-2 in each corner, for a total of 9 rounds, or until square completely surrounds motif. Finish off & weave in ends.

This is a much smaller, simpler version of the triceratops square. (Sorry for the poor photo quality.)

 

Triceratops Head Square

 

Materials:

G hook

sport weight yarn

yarn needle to weave in ends

 

Note: Once again, gauge is unimportant, since the square can be made with any combination of hook & yarn. For reference, this finished square measures approximately 4 inches on each side.

 

Special Sts/Combos:

See previous pattern for explanation of BEGINNING CORNER and CORNER.

HDC decl: YO. Insert hook in 1st indicated st, YO & draw up a loop. Insert hook in second st indicated, YO, & draw up a loop. YO & draw hook through 2 loops on hook. YO & draw hook through remaining 3 loops. (Or, use whatever HDC decl. you're used to, it really doesn't matter.)

 

Note that ch-2 always counts as first HDC. Note that in rows 1, 9, & 12 the 2 chs you don't crochet in count as 1 HDC.

 

Ch 10.

1: HDC in 3rd ch from hook & in each remaining chain. 9 HDC

2: HDC decl. over first two sts. HDC in each of next 5 sts. HDC decl. over last 2 sts. 7 HDC

3: Ch 2, turn. HDC in next st & in each remaining st. 7 HDC

4: Ch 2, turn. HDC in next st & in each st to end, putting 3 HDC in last st. 9 HDC

5: Ch 2, turn. HDC twice in first st. HDC in each remaining st. 11 HDC

6: HDC over first 2 sts. HDC in each remaining st. 10 HDC

7: Ch 2, turn. HDC in next st & in each remaining st. 10 HDC

8: Ch 2, turn. HDC in next 4 sts. HDC decl. over next 2 sts. Ch 5.

9: HDC in 3rd ch. HDC in each ch and HDC. 10 HDC

10: Ch 2, turn. HDC in next st & each remaining st. 10 HDC

11: Ch 2, turn. HDC in next 5 sts. (6 HDC) Ch 5 at end of row.

12: HDC in 3rd ch from hook & in each remaining ch. HDC in each of next 4 sts. HDC decl. over last 2 sts. 9 HDC

13: HDC decl. over first 2 sts. HDC in next st. HDC decl. over next 2 sts. Leave remaining sts unworked. 3 HDC

14: Ch 2, turn. HDC in next 2 sts. 3 HDC

15: Ch 2, turn. HDC in next st. HDC twice in 3rd st. Chain 4.

16: HDC in 3rd ch from hook. HDC in next 2 sts. HDC decl. over last 2 sts. Finish off.

 

Note: Once again, you can merely crochet a granny square & then sew the motif to it. Or, follow the directions below for a made-on-the-motif square.

 

Note: Stitch numbers might be inexact & are at any rate unimportant, you are aiming to put the slip stitches in more or less the center of the motif. Facing vertical loop means the vertical loop of the HDC in question that you see facing you; it's actually going to be horizontal when motif is right side up or upside down. Rotate motif as necessary to ensure a continuous circle.

 

With wrong side of motif facing you, join yarn with a sl st in facing vertical loop of 5th st of row 7. Ch 2. Sl st in facing vertical loop of 4th st in row 6. Ch 2. Sl st in facing vertical loop of 3rd st of row 7. Ch 2. Sl st in facing vertical loop of 4th st in row 8. Ch 2. Join with sl st in to first chain. You will have 4 ch-2 spaces.

 

1: In first ch-2 space, ch 3 (counts as 1 DC). DC twice more in same ch-2 space. Chain one. Work (3 DC, ch 1) in each of remaining 3 ch-2 spaces. Join to top of beg. ch-3 with a sl st.

2: Sl st. around to first ch sp. Work BEGINNING CORNER in first ch-1 space. Chain 2. (CORNER, ch-2) in each of the other 3 ch-1 spaces.

3: Sl st around to center of beginning corner. Work BEGINNING CORNER in first corner. Chain 2. DC twice, ch-2 in each ch-2 space, and CORNER, ch-2 in each corner around, joining to first st in round as before.

 

Work rounds 4, 5, & 6 (or as many rounds as necessary to completely surround motif) in same manner, always putting (2 DC, ch 2) in each ch-2 space and (CORNER, ch-2) in each corner. At end of round 6, join & finish off. Weave in ends.

 

 

I hope this is relatively clear. As always, I have tried my best. The important part is the motif; if you can't understand the square directions, just sew the motif to the square of your choice.
