Green CAL anyone?

Recommended Posts

I found a really cool pattern for a recycled plastic bag tote. http://craftingagreenworld.com/2008/06/19/yearn-worthy-yarn-plarn/

You make "plarn" out of plastic bags and then use them to crochet things like tote bags, purses, grocery bags, etc.

I am also planning to collect used blue jeans and clothes from my freinds and family and try to turn them into a crocheted area rug.

Does anyone else think this might be a fun CAL or am I a little touched in the head?

hey, sounds like fun! I enjoy "rag" crochet... you can make baskets, casserole cozies, rugs, trivets and whatever you want! Annie's attic also has some cute patterns for bags made from shopping bags and trash bags... they look cute!

You also could substitute these materials into patterns for purses, etc. that call for a "Q" hook and multi strand yarn.

I can't "join" at the moment, but will check in now and again! Thanks for the fun idea! :hug

I have been hoarding plastic bags for months with a vague notion of making a bunch of really sturdy market bags out of the plarn. I so don't need another project, but I cannot resist, count me in!! Now I have to find the pattern I had picked out!

a wee bit touched. ;) i've had a plastic bag pattern tucked away for a while now. but when I read that it ruins your hooks, I couldn't do it. couldn't imagine fighting plastic for every stitch. now there is a "recipe" where you meld many plastic bags together and then sew them into market bags that looked doable.

but when I read that it ruins your hooks, I couldn't do it.

I've made several plarn tote bags and not ruined my hook. Just to be safe, I do try to remember to use the plastic N hook I don't like so much, so if it does get ruined, it's no big loss.

I'm game for this one. Does it have to be plarn, or can it be recycled materials (VHS tape, fabric, frogged sweaters, etc.)?

I think any recycled material should be fine. I am doing plarn probably, but I'm also considering a scrap material rug.

I'd love to join on to this CAL and make a green project. I've been so busy lately trying to make a starghan and now a baby RR that I've got to get motivated about a new green recycled project. I really want to make a bread bag tote and also want to make a plastic basket for Easter. So I'm officially in and will try to get something going soon. Of course that's if I can put down my RR that Aggie May has been helping me with. :crocheting
