Yep, this happens. You could always wind your yarn into balls beforehand. If you do that, be sure to wind loosely as the yarn will stretch if you wind too tightly. A yarn winder is a good purchase if you tend to wind yarn a lot. I have also found if I put my yarn in a ziploc bag so it doesn't roll around all over the floor (or sofa), it doesn't seem to be as tangled. I don't know why this would help, but it seems to. That's not to say it never tangles as sometimes it still does. And then I do what you all do -- stop and untangle it. If I'm making something where I'll need to change skeins anyway, I might just cut and move on, and untangle it later.
