what is a "yoke"

I see it all the time with baby sweaters but I have no idea what it is

I think the yoke is the part that goes over the shoulders and around the neck (kinda like for an Ox).

In the front, the yoke goes across the chest and shoulders. In the back it goes across the upper back and shoulders. It can come down to the bottom of the armpit area, but doesn't always.

 

In crochet, the yoke is often differentiated by being done in a different stitch pattern, such as the yoke in double crochet, and the body in a double crochet shell stitch pattern.
