what is a tunisian crochet hook?

i have seen this tunisian in web pages many times. is it different from the common hooks?

a tunisian crochet hook is a longer hook with an end like a knitting needle used for creating all kinds of awesome objects like afghans with pictures in them and really anything. It creates a bit of a thicker material but it's amazing though.

A tunisian hook is also called an afghan hook.

 

Tunisian/afghan stitch (and its many variants) makes for a very different type of crochet look. You typically (I think always) have a forward row where you pick up loops, and then a return row where you work the loops off.

I love it too! I was handed down some and had no idea what they were until I tried it and the possibilities are really endless....ESPECIALLY if you also like cross stitch, because tunisian crochet makes a great cross stitich base.

I have a large set from MoEZ or something like that. Super huge wooden hand made about 18 inches long and fat like dowels.
