Russian hook sizes

Question

Hi there

I found some lovely patterns on a russian crochet website and the only problem is that it doesn't describe what weight of yarn is called for. If I could figure out what hook size it is using then maybe I could figure out the yarn. It only lists diagrams so I guess I could use them as a guide but I like the look of the item and want it to be close. How could I translate the hook size to US equivalent?

This is the pattern I am looking at:

It says you're supposed to use a #3 hook, but I'm not sure if Russian hook sizes are different than ours. However, my guess is that they're close, looking at the yarn the the photo. Maybe sportweight?

(For the hook size, I went back to the page in Russian, the second line under the photo. My Russian sucks anymore, but enough that I could find the word "hook" when compared to the translation!)

Good luck!

OOOH thanks! I appreciate that. I am going to look at my hooks and see which one makes sense. A size 3 hook is pretty small but the garment has such an open look to the stitches, I was thinking it would be a large hook in comparison to the yarn.
