Advice wanted

I have been searching high and low and under rocks to find an oval shaped placemat pattern that I like. I found this one pattern that is made from size 5 cotton, I've never worked with thread so I have no idea what size size 5 thread is. I was wondering if you all thought this could be made with yarn and come up with similar results? Here it is http://www.angelfire.com/folk/celtwich/Roundoval.html

you should try a few rounds with the yarn you like and try different size hooks to get to the size you like...Of course the bigger the yarn and hook the bigger your project will be theres also a pattern for oval placemat set on Free Patterns.com

You could always try it in a sport weight yarn and a F hook..

Or even try with the cotton

i think size 3 cotton.. would make them tad bit bigger but not much.. or you could skip a round or two if it got too large..

 

or a sport to fingering weight cotton.. that is a slight bit bigger than #3..
