I'm looking for a trendy pattern .... I'm not really sure what I want... My sister in law is in fashion design school in NYC and I'm trying to think of something I could make her for christmas... last year I made her an awsome scarf.. any ideas?

How about a poncho? Heaven knows they're trendy right now. lol

There are tons of patterns so you could find or alter one to be just perfect for her, especially with all the awesome yarns out there.

 

Or maybe a shawl.

 

Or how about a bag/purse/tote?

 

I'm not a hat person but how about a hat?

 

Did you want clothing? Accessories? Bedding? Bath stuff? There's tons and tons of stuff out there; on the web and in magazines.

Here are my ideas...most are crochet. But one thing you could do for her, since she is a design student is purchase a sketchbook..any size and decorate it. You could do a neat cover using yarn, photos from fashion magazines or scrapbook supplies.

Being it will be for Xmas, making long long scaves with matching hat would be wonderful, and so much neat yarn to make it out of. As already stated there are a zillion sites for free stuff to make. Ponco, not my choice, as one may want it a certain lenght and widith, stick to scarves and hats. Buying the thinker yarn, Boule (sp) Homespun are or should be cheaper in the summer months, cause who the heck wants to wear that in the summer, so look around. I know you will make the right choice and it will be wonderful, impress the heck out of her.

Thanks for all of ur suggestions, I made her a REALLY long scarf last year for christmas (it goes down to her feet ) she loves it tho and wares it all the timeThere was another pattern posted in another link that was a skirt/caplet/shirt that i think she would LOVE ... Now I just have to see if the yarn shops here have the pattern. I also love that jessica simpson shall on stich diva, I think thats awsome. If I cant get the other pattern I will probably do that ... i love the sketch book idea too. I might make her that too
