Connecting squares

HollyM

Question

Hi!

I'm working on edging and joining a comfortghan and I'm beginning to wonder what I was thinking when I came up with this idea Group projects are scary.

Here's what I've got so far

squares I just layed them down randomly to take the picture, I'll do a better job of arranging before I start joining.

As you can see, a few of them are really misshapen even with the edging. I'm waiting on 3 more squares to arrive, and I need to make a few more myself because a few gals finally admitted they wouldn't be able to do theirs

How would you tackle this? Oringinally I had wanted to do crocheted joining, but trying to make sure the eding on each square had exactly the same number of stitches would send me to the loony bin Even with whip-stitching, how do I deal with the difference in sizes on some of them? I've tried to get them as close as possible when doing the edging, but none of them are exact.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and I'm trying to get this finished by Thurday or Friday to mail so the recipient will get it by her Birthday on Monday.

Edited to say, this project doesn't involve anyone here or on any of the other online crochet communities. It's a group of my personal friends, of which some of them happen to crochet, for another friend in our group. I hope it doesn't sound too snarky, it's all very good intentioned and I"m trying to keep that frame of mind, I'm just a little frustrated and feeling a little overwhelmed/pressured at the moment.

First I want to say how beautiful those squares are!

I only see two, on the right, that are going to give you the most trouble. I'd go ahead and border then in the dark green (I think that's what the color is) to get them the same size or close to it.

Then when you join them all, you can ease a couple stitchs into one stitch here and there if needed. I do it all the time, especially with mile a minutes afghans. As long as you do it evenly, it doesn't pucker or bunch.

Maybe someone has another idea. :knit

I can't wait to see it all done. :artist

holly.. once you start joining they will all kind of "self block" for lack of a better word.. the weight of the other squares will shape up the ones that arent perfect..

does that make sense?

as far as exact same number of stitches..why does that worry you .. you can crochet over and not thru the stitches.. to kind of even it out..

Ok, I'm glad to know that joining them will straighten them out some. The two on the right hadn't been edged yet when I took that pic.

Elizabethe, I thought in order to do a crochet joining, you had to have the same number of stiches or it wouldn't come out right?? I've never actually tried it before, just what I"ve heard.

Peer pressure, love it

Starting to whipstich tomorrow. Work & school got in the way this week and the 3 squares that the makers *swore* went in the mail Monday, aren't here yet
