Can/Does anyone use plastic bottle caps

Like the ones on water bottles? I was wondering this because we go through a LOT of water bottles. Anyone?

I have been saving the tops of (large) salad dressing bottles in the hopes that they would work when covered with cotton yarn to make trivets. I am just concerned that they might melt if I used the wrong pot.

There is some free patterns on the web urtilizing bottle caps. Some call for sewing a little circle of fabric (yo-yo) around the cap, and stuffing a cotton ball inside before closing up the yo-yo. Also you can crochet around the bottle cap instead. These can then be sewn together to form a trivet. There is a bottle cap Santa, tree and wreath on About.com.

DARSKI---I saw a potholder like that at an antique shop this past weekend. It was a cluster of grapes made from covered pop bottle caps. (The old metal ones that you needed a bottle opener for)
