Hello

I am hoping someone who knows how to use tatting hooks can help me.I am trying to find one as a gift for a fellow crocheter.I have no idea what a tatting hook looks like.I went to Hobby lobby and jo-anns and the sales people were not helpful at all they said at both stores I never heard of that. They didn't even try to help me find one of these.are there diffrent sizes also for these? The lady i am buying this for didn't specify a size that she wanted. she just said she'd like one to lean how to do it.Also she would like some patterns.any idea where i might find free patterns i could send her ? Or for that matter i could always buy her a beginners book if i could find one. I checked my local book store and could not find any books on this. Is it possible that Tatting has another name too? Thanks in advance!:think

Thank you! I will watch for your sisters response:clap

I think it's called a tatting shuttle, not a tatting hook... that might help... I know you wind the thread inside the shuttle.

My sister tats... I emailed her your questions and will post answers when she responds.

There are 2 forms of tatting. One (the more common) is done with a shuttle, as mentioned by the other ladies on this thread. The other is done with a long needle.

(could be what your friend thinks is a hook, if she saw a picture of it?). I just gave away in the sale/trade section 2 books on needle tatting. You can see the pictures of the needle there. The books are by Barbara Foster, and are from 1994 (last copyright).

Hope this helps a little.

I'm trying to find a picture of the plastic shuttles I use. Here it is http://www.shopatron.com/product/part_number=479/181.0

That is my shuttle of choice.

regular tatting is done with a shuttle. There is also needle tatting done with a long needle. Then there is crotat done with a special hook. It is a straight shaft with no thumb indentions. This method incorporates tatting and crochet in one pattern. There are crotat kits available at Annies Attic and with patterns. I hope this will be of some help to you.
